WeevilWonders

Jewelweevilsaresonamedbecausetheysparklelikegems.Theirelytra,orwingcovers,shimmerwithanarrayofcolorsfrombrilliantturquoiseandshinygoldtopaleorangeandpink.Withsuchnoticeablecolors,you’dthinkthey’dbeeasytargetsforpredatorslikefrogs,lizards,andbirds.Butweevilswanttobeseen.Theircolorsactasawarning:Don’teatme.Itaste bad.


There’sawordforthisinscience.It’scalledaposematism.Itistheadvertisingbyananimaltopotentialpredatorsthatitisnotworthattackingoreating.Aposematismcantaketheformofbrightcolors,sounds,odors,orothercharacteristics.Thesesignalsarehelpfultobothpredatorandprey,sincebothavoidpotential harm.
