Darwinwasn’ttheonlyscientisttobevoicingthistheory.Severalnaturalistshadalreadydevelopedthisideabytheendofthe18thcentury.Darwin’sgreatcontributiontosciencewasthathewasabletoexplainhow andwhy evolution occurred.

In1859,Darwinpublishedabook,OntheOriginofSpecies.Init,heproposedthatspecies evolve.Hesaidthatalllivingthingscantracetheirdescentbacktoacommon ancestor.


Darwinalsosuggestedameansbywhichweevolve: naturalselection.Thissaysthatsomeplantsandanimalshavetraitsthatworkbestinaparticularplace.Theselivingthingsaretheonesthatwillsurviveand reproduce.

Overtime,apopulationchanges,orevolves,tobetterfitwhereitis.Withenoughtime,however,awholenewspeciescanemerge.Darwin’sthinkingcontributedtosignificantchangesinhowpeoplesawthenaturalworld.Hiscontributionstosciencewillalwaysbe remembered.
