Itcantakeuptofivedaysforahatchlingtobreakfreefromitsegg.Hatchlingsfeedontheiryolksacfor30 more days.

Forabouttwoyears,youngtortoisesarekeptinspecialpens.Theseprotectthemfrompredators.Theylearntoforageontheir own.

Whentheyarefiveyearsold,oraboutthesizeofadinnerplate,theyareoldenoughtofendforthemselves.Thentheyarereleasedtothe wild.

KeepingthePeace

Anothersignificantconservationgoalistopreventhuman‑tortoiseconflicts.Thethreemaininhabitedislands—SantaCruz,SanCristóbal,andIsabela—havealreadyseen conflicts.


OnSantaCruz,forexample,tortoiseshavebeenarrivingattheedgesofthecityofPuertoAyora.Sometortoiseshaveeatenplastics.Othershavebeenhitbycars.Andatleastonewasattackedbystray dogs.
